Introducing tour latest A-lister - Sam. Carving a career in Graphic Design, Sam his one to watch!

What sparked your passion for design?
I was so fascinated by how the rainbow colours came about.

How creative were you as a youngster?
I was the one that mum went to to re-draw a piece for furniture she saw on a
shop window driving past.

Do you come from a creative family?
Creative in a business sense, not design.

Were they supportive of your desire to be a designer?
They were surprised!

What sort of education and training have you had?
I did a course in creative advertising. How to craft successful advertising
campaigns, art direction and copywriting. Then I moved on to graphic design
from there. However I cant compensate for the best education I've had,
experience.

Who did you want to work for when you first entered the industry?
Saatchi & Saatchi.

Tell us about your first project and what do you feel about it now?
It was a logo design I made for a dinnerware company. It was a lot of fun to
see ideas come to life.

What is your preferred software to work with?
Adobe suite is the all in one workshop.

What has been the greatest advancement in technology over the past 5 years?
Hello, iPhone.

Is digital technology going to eliminate the need for print?
Not until that feeling you get touching your printed work dies.

Whose work do you really admire and why?
Mark Ryden. He is dark, intriguing, and lives in a world of his own.

Who has been the greatest person that you’ve ever had the pleasure of
working with and what have they taught you?

It has to be Rohan Rimmer, my last boss. He is inspiring, patient, loving
and a lot of fun to be around.

How would you describe your work?
Illustrative, photographic, experimental and adventurous.

What are your plans for the future?
The best plan is not to have one, but keep an open mind, adventurous heart
and an evolving spirit.

What sort of company would you like to work with next?
One that believes in the work culture and ethic.

What is your opinion of Australian design?
A fast evolving, thriving for difference.

What is the best/worst thing about being a designer in Australia?
Best of all that the art scene is healthy. Worst is that the job is economy
dependent.

In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge the Australian design
industry has to face in the near future?

Making a name for Australian design on the world centre stage and to do that
you need to provide opportunities.

What is your creative outlet outside of design?
Photography and illustration. Also love to walk.

What is the best designed bar in Melbourne?
I'll have to see them all to be able to tell.
