23 Questions!

Comic book super hero graphic designer? We're still not sure however we're happy to present our latest A-List, Jason, to you all! Mind you, if you see a flicker of a cape and a hint of Helvetica flash by when you're next at the Corner Hotel, you can rest assured you're in good hands.

What sparked your passion for design?
It was just naturally always there from a young age in some way. I think comic books probably played their part too.

How creative were you as a youngster?
I spent a lot of time drawing pictures of Superman and Batman, lets just say I wasn’t the most ‘academic’ kid around.

Do you come from a creative family?
I suppose they are in there own way, just in a different way to me.

Were they supportive of your desire to be a designer?
Very, I was always encouraged to draw and create bits and pieces. it was what I really enjoyed.

What sort of education and training have you had?
Diploma of Arts (Design), Bachelor of Visual Arts Graphic Design/Multimedia University of Ballarat, and now trying to make my way through a Bachelor of Technology (Computing Studies) part time.

Who did you want to work for when you first entered the industry?
I think I wanted to work in fashion when I first left Uni. I ended up working on AFL supporter apparel, not quite what I had in mind but it was still fun.

Tell us about your first project and what do you feel about it now?
Finished art and packaging at a big multinational confectionery company, not quite what I thought it would be, but looking back I learnt a lot of really good practical skills in a short time that they don’t teach you at university

What is your preferred software to work with and what has been the greatest advancement in technology over the past 5 years? I am in my element with illustrator, we have had a lot of (mostly) good times together and Dreamweaver. My iPhone has changed the way I work and keeps me entertained when I’m bored!

Is digital technology going to eliminate the need for print?
I still prefer to pick up a magazine or newspaper over reading online. I tend to just skim over articles online but I can get really sucked in a good mag.

Whose work do you really admire and why?
Nigo, he has the ability to take the same idea and reinvent it with his brand A Bathing Ape and still keep it fresh. And Evan Herox, I wish I was as talented as him.

Who has been the greatest person that you’ve ever had the pleasure of working with and what have they taught you?
Freelancing full time for over 4 years I have come across a lot people out there. I think I have just taken little bits and pieces from everyone.

How would you describe your work?
Hmm… maybe versatile.

What are your plans for the future?
To continue to get out there and meet lots of people, build my business and build more websites

What sort of company would you like to work with next?
Anywhere with cool people…or somewhere with my name on the door…or both

What is your opinion of Australian design?
We have a lot of talent here but little creatively challenging work to keep them all amused.

What is the best/worst thing about being a designer in Australia?
It would be great to be a little closer to other major hubs of the world

In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge the Australian design industry has to face in the near future?
I think the design industry is under valued by the greater business world in Australia. We need some sort of body that actively promotes the value of quality and well thought out design strategies.

What is your creative outlet outside of design?
I still enjoy drawing when I get the chance

What is the best designed bar in Melbourne?
Not sure if it’s very designer but it’s the Corner Hotel for me

What are your top 5 websites at the moment?
ffffound.com
behance.net
jeansnow.net
weeklycomicbookreview.com
jasongrace.com.au

What CD are you currently listening to and is it any good?
Been listening to some new tracks from Kele Okereke, looking forward to the album.

If I was a font, I’d be...?
Just 55 Helvetica Roman
