Keep up to date with technology
‘To the minute’ knowledge and understanding of current technology is paramount. As CS4 takes the stage, more studios are upgrading, taking advantage of more efficient developments within the suite, and so too should you as a designer be up skilling. Investing in a short refresher course, or upgrading your at home set up is a proactive step in adding value to your service. ‘Keeping an ear to the ground’ in regards to global industry news, research and development, and inspirational material is a fantastic way to remain on the ball. Use the media and internet as a tool for knowledge and trend awareness. Make note of studios and companies that interest you. Let your Artisan consultant know all about your updated skills, your improved proficiency in certain programmes, send us through an update to your folio, and let us know who you would LOVE to work for.

A perfect example can be found in the Corporate sector recently with the emergence of Interactive PDF forms which fall somewhere between Desktop Publishing and New Media in classification.

Downtime can always be useful in ensuring that you have the chance to spring clean your folio and ensure that you include new pieces that are up to date and relevant. Too frequently, we see people present folio pieces that are close to a decade old and may not be a real reflection on what you're capable of doing.
