March 27, 2010

So you have heard about this “Earth Hour” somewhere - but what is it? And when does this ‘hour’ fall in our busy year?

All this Earth Hour fuss actually started right here Down Under back in 2007, in Sydney – and has managed to cause a domino effect across the globe, giving individuals and organizations the opportunity to get behind the world’s largest global climate change initiative from their very own homes and work places.

The first scheduled Earth Hour resulted in a staggering 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights out for one hour on the same day to make their stand against climate change. The following year more than 50 million people across 35 countries participated – turning the lights out at major landmarks – such as San Francisco’s 'Golden Gate Bridge' and Rome’s 'Colosseum' for an entire hour – something that is virtually unheard of in our modern 24/7hr big city lives! The darkness is referred to on the official website :
http://www.earthhour.org, as a symbol of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

By March 2009, over 4000 cities in 88 countries turned their lights out for the cause – making it the largest collective global climate change effort yet – which is where the challenge lies with us this month to crack the record well and truly.

Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time), and is open to all.

“A global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world... (Earth Hour) ... is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.”
