in profile / studio505
studio505 is a Melbourne based architectural firm involved in a range of cutting edge, controversial and distinctive design projects in Australia and around the world. Specialising in innovative and sustainable design across all built forms, directors Dylan Brady and Dirk Zimmermann have led the studio on a remarkable journey through design, architecture and construction.
Founded in 2002, studio505 has developed an intense and projective approach to the exploration and communication of its architectural ideology. The studio seeks to inform, learn from and test their clients and themselves by rigorously investigating the possibilities and outcomes inherent in the practice of design.
Studio505’s most recently completed project “Pixel” is the first carbon neutral office building in Australia, and has achieved the highest Green Star score ever awarded by the Green Building Council of Australia. Pixel has achieved a perfect score of 100 points under the Green Star rating system for building design - 75 points being the benchmark for a 6 Star Green Star rating. Pixel gained an extra five points for innovation, equating to world leadership.
Green Building Council Chief Executive Romilly Madew said Pixel was truly a green masterpiece, pushing boundaries and going above and beyond the "norm" in green building innovation.
"The Pixel Building, having achieved the maximum Green Star points ever awarded under Green Star, could arguably be said to be Australia's greenest building and is quite possibly the first building of its kind in the world," she said.
Located on the old Carlton United Brewery site just north of Melbourne’s CBD, Pixel will be open to the public during Melbourne’s Open House weekend, 24 and 25 July 2010. Tours will be conducted every 30 minutes.
