Last time, we introduced you to the lovely Elke. This time, we want to introduce you to our most recent Design Consultant, Mathew Hehir.

Name: Mathew Hehir
Role: Recruitment Consultant - Design

When did you join the Artisan family?
I started at Artisan in early March this year, for some reason it only feels like two months ago. And the Artisan family is definitely interesting, diverse and entertaining.

Describe your role and what a typical day would entail?
I’m a design consultant within the Design team, working with Debbie and Ally. I usually start with muesli and a coffee, breakfast really is an important part of the day. Then there are all the calls to new temp roles that are starting, I say Hi, see how everyone is doing and have a chat with clients and candidates. Mornings are a great time to keep that rhythm going and call around to our clients, new clients as well. The afternoons seem to be when studios around Melbourne need to book temps for the following days and weeks, that gives me hours to fill temp and permanent jobs with the rest of the team. Through out the day there is always a new folio to look at, whether it’s a response to a well written ad or a new candidate that has come into our office. And there is usually a late order in the afternoon to fill before I head out the door.

How would you describe the culture at Artisan?
Having known the crew at Artisan from my days as a candidate, I was pretty excited about joining the team and learning all about working in the industry. Everyone has been really supportive and taken the time to show me the ropes. Even when the pressure is on, there is still a good fun vibe at Artisan.

What do you enjoy most about working at Artisan?
There are so many things to choose from, the high 5s, the people who high 5 and the previously mentioned supportive team.

What is one skill that you’ve developed since working at Artisan?
Well now I can make an impressive Espresso Martini, those are legendary. Besides that, I’m getting much better at remembering peoples names, both in person and on the phone. I am definitely meeting a whole lot more people these days.

What were you doing prior to Artisan?
I’ve been an account manager and a design manager in advertising agencies and design studios around Melbourne. Now I’m on the other side of the fence, I’ve got that understanding of how the fun filled, mad capped, glamorous world of advertising and design works.

Tell us about your best and worst employment experience…
The best experience goes back to the days when our team would all come together from across Australia. Working in the same office, collaborating, and the partying. Good times. Not necessarily the worst, but perhaps one of the least memorable, was working as a promoter in one of Melbourne’s city bars. People are happy to go to a bar under your name one week, its not so easy to get your friends to come back every week.

What makes a great work environment?
Its about the people, it’s always about the people. And the temperature. I know it sounds crazy but when its freezing cold it can be difficult to work in a coat, jumper, scarf and gloves. On the flip side, when the air-con stops working and the temperature climbs to the mid thirties, it stops being fun.

What is the most common mistake you find businesses making when looking for new staff?
It can be easy to hire someone in a hurry, especially if a company is left in the lurch. Taking a bit of extra time to make sure that potential employee is the right fit can be worth it in the long run.

What makes a standout CV?
A good CV has a logical flow, whether it’s a chronological progression or grouped by the type of campaign or project. This is typically one of the first introductions people will have of you, so use your CV to tell a story about who you are and what you can do.

What makes a successful interview?
Be yourself. Sometimes its hard depending on your circumstances, nerves can get the better of you or your current working situation might be a little awkward. The people interviewing you want to see who you really are, they want to get to know you better, so be yourself.

What achievements are you the most proud of?
Packing up my little Toyota and moving to Melbourne.

What do you find yourself doing in your spare time?
I’m on the phone to my family and friends. I’m out enjoying good company at a restaurant or bar around town. I’d also like to say I’m going to the gym... but I’m not. Much. And there is my good old friend TV.

What are your top 5 favourite websites?
www.theage.com.au
www.timeanddate.com
www.weatherzone.com.au
www.lissiesblog.com.au
www.google.com

What makes you feel alive?
Waking up when on a holiday, there is fresh coffee, baked goods and a whole day of opportunity ahead.

If you had to describe yourself in 50 words or less, you would say…
I like to laugh. Loudly, with youthful abandon.
