James Archibald of Lume Creative remembers taking the final plunge into the world of photography after toying with the idea for several years.
“I remember that day I went for the interview and then finding out I was accepted into RMIT. I came home, put my suit away for the last time and rang my employer and resigned. After 18 years in the hospitality industry I was finally doing what I loved”
Five years down the track and his company Lume Creative is starting to kick some photographic goals. The last 12 months has been something of a whirlwind ride. After receiving some hard earned points at the Canon APPA awards, James entered a couple of images into the Moran Contemporary Portrait Prize – Australia’s richest Photographic Competition. Out of 4500 entries two of James’ images were chosen in the final category. His shot ‘Woolamai bathers’ is now travelling Australia as part of the exhibition.
“Its great to be recognized in such a way by your peers, a really fulfilling achievement”
As well as his commercial work James is building a reputation for his fine art landscape prints. He sells his work at a number of galleries around Gippsland and is about to tackle the big city, selling his images through a new gallery in Ripponlea.
Next on the agenda?
“Keep up the commercial work because I really love working in that creative, high energy environment, keep up the landscape work and maybe look at expanding into publishing.”
