gnarls barkley - the odd couple (warner)
April 14, 2008
I do love the quirkiness of Gnarls Barkley although I tend to wonder if they draw some of their inspiration from the bigbeat movement during the 90's. The production on their records just engage you; you could play this record on the crappiest stereo ever and i'm convinced it would still sonically resonant in a way other records wish they could. The album is riddled with oddly tasty moments; 'Run' is like a drugged out 60's go-go track, 'Would Be Killer' sounds like early Massive Attack, 'No Time Soon' rides on a distorted beat drowning in apathy. Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo form an interesting collaboration which just keeps pushing the sound a little more with each album.
