michael jackson - thriller 25 (sony bmg)
June 30, 2009
In tribute to Michael Jackson, we thought we'd take a moment to go back and visit the album that everyone in their 30's seems to have had a copy of at some point in their life. Yes, we're talking about one of the biggest selling albums of all time - 'Thriller'. For many of us, this is how we prefer to remember Michael Jackson as that shy but extremely talented (and very normal looking) kid who moon walked his way in the music history books. When you consider the tracks that came from this one album (and this is back in the days when an album was only about 9 or 10 songs), 'Thriller' almost plays like a Michael Jackson best of in it's own right. Starting with the classic 'Wanna Be Starting Somethin'' through to hits like 'Beat It', 'Billie Jean', 'Human Nature', 'P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)' and, of course 'Thriller' itself, it is easy to get your head around why this album became a benchmark in pop music. Whether or not the 25th anniversary reissue actually added anything to the release could be debated. The updated material with will.i.am, Fergie, Akon and Kayne West, if anything, made the album feel all the more stereotypical and bland. If anything, i'd rather pull out my original vinyl and enjoy it in all it's gatefold cover glory.
