florence + the machine - lungs (island)
July 28, 2009
When 'Lungs' was released in the UK on July 6th, only one artist managed to keep this hot act from the #1 spot; Michael Jackson. Ironically, much of the lyrical content for Florence + The Machine's debut album deals with violence and death, often drawing the line closely between Nick Cave and just plain creepy. Speaking of Nick Cave, fans of him may find something to enjoy in 'Lungs', as might fans of Kate Bush and Bjork, just because there is a certain quirkiness connecting these three artists together. You might gather from these initial words that 'Lungs' isn't really an album that this reviewer has gone for however you would be rather wrong. 'Lungs' is an intriguing body of work; just how do you combine an indie rock meets pop attitude that won Critics Choice Award at this years BRITS. It isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea and, if there is one criticism, it would be that Florence can tend to sound very same-same through out the entire album. This aside, there are some remarkable songs on this album that is sure to become many a person's album of the year. Her cover of 'You Got The Love' needs to be heard to be believed!
