cyndi lauper - bring ya to the brink (sony bmg)
June 01, 2008
Sure, it may have been some time since we last heard from Cyndi Lauper. Mostly remembered for her 80's hits ('Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', 'Time After Time', 'She Bop', 'True Colours'), the 90's weren't the kindest to Cyndi in terms of chart success. Having said that, many of her fans consider her body of work during the 90's to be some of the most creatively successful... which brings us up to 'Bring Ya To The Brink'. This has to be Cyndi's party album. The album opens with the aptly titled 'High & Mighty', produced by dance act Scumfrog and setting the tone for the quality and calibre of album Cyndi has created. Basement Jaxx come on board to produce the twisted love child of 'Iko Iko' titled 'Rocking Chair', Digital Dog produced 'Give It Up' and Axwell produced 'Rain On Me'; she's brought out big name dance acts to make sure that she gets this album right - and she has succeeded. 'Same 'Ol Story', first heard at Mardi Gras this year when Lauper closed the dance party, is the reason why the album contains the explicit language warning although it has also been chosen as the first single released internationally. It still may be debatable if this is Lauper's response to Madonna's 'Confessions On a Dancefloor' however this is certainly the most groove we've had from Lauper in some time.
