weezer - the red album (geffen)
June 19, 2008
There is this irresistable appeal about Weezer; almost like that daggy band that you really can't help but like. The funny thing is that, musically, they're one extremely tight unit that do write some really great songs. Look over their career; tracks like 'Buddy Holly', 'The Sweater Song' and 'Islands In The Sun' are all worthy of the status they're acquired and it is because they've managed to cultivate this rather craftly little niche for themselves. Weezer fans are not going to be disappointed by 'The Red Album'. Lead single 'Pork And Beans' is classic Weezer, with a line within the song often used to describe their own music; 'catchy chorus and beats that they can sing along'. Keep an eye out for the clip as well which features parodies of all the current Youtube classics, including this reviewers ultimate favourite, Dramatic Look Prairie Dog. There is rarely a dull moment on 'The Red Album'; the band aren't known for their slow love songs (although this album does feature one; 'Heart Songs') and when they want to rock it out, they really know how to do that too. What other band decide to close their album with a cover of The Band's 'The Weight'? In a word, lotsafun!
