harry connick jr - your songs (sony bmg)
October 19, 2009
Ok, so the Artisan music reviews are probably best known for a lot of dance... a bit of pop... the occasional cool tip of indie... so, Harry Connick Jr might be a little left of centre. However, our intention has always been to cover all bases. And with Christmas (yes, the dreaded first mention) being only 10 weeks away, it's time to explore all those options for presents that you may not consider for yourself. In short, we're being exceedingly unselfish by presenting you with options for presents well in advance that your mum of slightly older sister will cherish you for. 'Your Songs' is, unsurprisingly, an album of covers with songs that may or may not be yours. Generally, they're other peoples however we can assume Mr Connick Jr here means that they may mean something to you... or not. In his list is the likes of such classics as 'Can't Help Falling In Love With You', '(They Long To Be) Close To You', 'The Way You Look Tonight', 'Your Song', 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', 'Just The Way You Are' and even a ultra lounge take on The Beatles 'And I Love Her'. Sadly, no Pixies, Nine Inch Nails or Nirvana to be seen. Most of the songs hail from the 60s and 70s so that should give you an indication of the age bracket this album has set as a target but you have to admit that Harry Connick Jr has a certain appeal that is both disturbing and alluring at the same time.
