As you would suspect from the surname, Mahalia is indeed the daughter of a certain Cold Chisel frontman. 'The Soul Mates Volume 1' is aptly titled as it would seem all of Mahalia's good mates have popped in to help this album be actualised. Mark Lizotte (better known as Diesel), Jade Macrae, Gary Pinto and even Jimmy Barnes have all dropped in to add their touch to this collection of covers and originals. And, boy, can this lady sing. Mahalia handles 'Proud Mary' in a way that would make Tina Turner proud; lots of guts and gusto. Her arrangement of 'You Are My Sunshine' is gospel tinged with the spirit of Booker T floating in the studio with them. An impressive collection from a young talent.
