goldfrapp - head first (mute)
March 29, 2010
Love them or hate them, you have to admit that Goldfrapp are pretty unique. From their early days producing moody pseudo-trip hop albums like 'Felt Mountain' through to their more eletro-pop anthems like 'Twist', 'Love Machine' and 'Ride a White Horse', they've constantly come back with a new take on their sound. 'Head First' can best be described as ABBA meets Xanadu; it's an extremely 80's sounding joyfest that is so full of phat synth sounds and sing-a-long choruses that it's likely to push whatever was left of their alternative fan base right away and embrace a more commercial audience. First single, 'Rocket', is just pure pop fun complete with Van Halen style keyboard chops. Tracks like 'Shiny And Warm' and 'Believer' sounds like the love child of early Vince Clarke Depeche Mode and the Nolan Sisters. 'Alive' is where Goldfrapp sound the most ELO. 'Head First' sounds like classic ABBA with a touch of electro. It's not going to be everyone's taste however it is the most 'campest' thing that Goldfrapp have done to date.
