scissor sisters - night work (universal)
June 25, 2010
It's been a crazy period for the Scissor Sisters since they initially exploded on the scene in the mid-noughties. Since the last album, 'Ta-Dah!', they've worked with Australia's own Kylie Minogue, lost a drummer and had a well deserved break. 'Night Work' is the first album in some time and, while it contains the infamous retro sound that Scissor Sisters always manage to achieve, the album feels very hit and miss. The first single, 'Fire With Fire' is a great little rock track. It's not a 'classic' but it certainly is catchy enough to spark your interest. The other 'leaked' track was 'Invisible Light', a Frankie Goes To Hollywood style six minute epic romp that was just crazy good and had fans foaming at the mouth in anticipation. Sadly, the rest of the album isn't as consistent. What feels like it is missing is 'the song', as opposed to 'the production' and 'the performance'. They treat each track with gusto and the production is as slick as always but, in a handful of cases, the songs just aren't there. Perhaps it is a case of working with the album however many tracks feel light on the chorus and a little too fluffy. With live shows just around the corner, perhaps the album will make more sense then.
