green roofs
July 21, 2010
Taking inspiration from innovative design solutions from Germany, Hong Kong, New York and London, Designers in Melbourne have recently opened its first Green Roof on an existing building. Green Roofs are to be found at greater frequency as features of Australia’s new environmentally sustainable buildings.
Green roofs are vegetated roofs grown in roof-top planting systems and are often used for recreation as well as environmental factors. There have been concerns that creating roof gardens on previously existing commercial buildings could damage the structure. There is also the high cost involved with creating a Green Roof. Melbourne’s most recent Green Roof came at a cost of around $250,000.
However, Green Roofs are an environmental tool in adapting to Climate Change. Researchers have found that Green Roofs can significantly lower energy consumption within buildings whilst providing greater building insulation and reducing inner-city temperatures.
Green Roofs provide many social and economic benefits to residents of Melbourne ranging right through from an increase in storm water management to reduced stress levels and providing an escape from urban living by creating sustainable community spaces.
As Melbourne’s population grows, there is strong argument for the adoption of Green Roofs to aid the state in the fight against Climate Change. The inclusion of Green Roofs in Architectural and Landscape design is just one way developers can think out side the square.
