is part time the new trend?
March 25, 2009
Latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics are indicating that part time employment seems to be the new trend in the Australian job markets.
For a few months consecutively, full time employment has decreased whilst part time employment has gone up. In February, employment actually increased by 1,800 to 10,810,400. Despite the fact that 53,800 full times jobs were lost, this increase was actually achieved via 55,600 part time jobs being created.
This seems to give a clear indication that, instead of shedding staff numbers, most employers are preferring to go to a part time arrangement which would be beneficial for all, allowing their staff to retain their income whilst also reducing the company overheads.
And clearly, as there is a larger number of part time opportunities created that full time lost, there would seem to be more part time opportunity out there for all.
